Shawmut Design and Construction breaks
ground on 170,000 s/f Edward R. Martin Middle School

East Providence, RI Rhode Island Department of Education, East Providence School District, Peregrine Group, Shawmut Design and Construction, and Ai3 Architects joined members of the community, students, faculty, and elected officials on April 9 to commemorate the ceremonial groundbreaking for the new Edward R. Martin Middle School. The project will reshape the educational landscape for 600 students in grades 6-8 and 240 students in PreK.

Led by construction management firm Shawmut Design and Construction, design firm Ai3 Architects, and owner project manager Peregrine Group, the phased 170,000 s/f project includes a three-floor addition on the north side of the building for grades 6-8, coupled with a two-floor addition on the south side for the PreK education center. The existing gymnasium and auditorium will be preserved and renovated to complement the new construction seamlessly.

“We’re proud to be part of this significant project that not only enhances a fundamental education facility but also fosters renewed community engagement,” said Chris Maury, senior director of Rhode Island at Shawmut Design and Construction. “Our team is dedicated to delivering a top-tier school that will inspire learning and growth for generations to come.”

The new Martin Middle School promises a modern and dynamic space, with key building highlights including the incorporation of hands-on-learning spaces seamlessly integrated into the academic core; a new early childhood learning center featuring 16 pre-kindergarten classrooms and support spaces; shared administration spaces; student commons; and library media center.

The new Martin Middle School reflects a holistic approach to education, blending modern infrastructure with inclusive learning experiences. As construction progresses, the school remains fully operational, ensuring continuity in education and minimal disruption for students and staff.
