Featured Women-Owned Businesses: Studio G Architects

Gail Sullivan
Founder and Managing Principal
Studio G Architects

What inspired you to start your firm, and how has your vision evolved over the years? Studio G Architects was founded on the belief that architecture should improve lives, not just buildings. From the beginning, our mission has been to design spaces that are inclusive, sustainable, and deeply connected to the people and communities they serve. Over time, this vision has expanded into a holistic approach that integrates social impact, equity, and environmental responsibility into every project.

Today, we design schools that nurture every learner, housing that promotes dignity and belonging, and civic spaces that foster connection. Just as important, we have built a culture where collaboration, mentorship, and diverse perspectives thrive, ensuring that our work reflects both community values and a commitment to a healthier planet.

What has been the most rewarding project or deal in your career, and what made it stand out? One of the most rewarding projects in my career has been Franklin Cummings Tech in Nubian Square. With a growing student body and new programs in the green economy, the school needed an innovative facility to prepare students for 21st century careers. We partnered closely with stakeholders in an extensive planning process, from site selection and visioning to space programming and cost analysis.

The resulting design delivers flexible, technology-rich classrooms and hands-on labs that support entrepreneurial learning while also anchoring Roxbury’s revitalization. What makes it stand out is how fully it reflects our mission: empowering students with opportunity, supporting economic mobility, and strengthening a community with architecture that inspires and transforms.

What skills or qualities do you believe are essential for success at your firm? At Studio G Architects, success comes from curiosity, collaboration, and a commitment to social impact. We approach each project with empathy, listening closely to the needs of everyone involved. Critical thinking and problem solving are essential, as every design must balance function, sustainability, and community priorities.

Studio G, founded as a Women Business Enterprise (WBE), is deeply committed to fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that multiple perspectives enrich our process and outcomes. Adaptability and creativity are equally important, as our projects range from schools to housing to civic spaces, each requiring an innovative approach. Strong communication skills, both visual and verbal, allow ideas to be shared and refined collaboratively. Success at Studio G is about design excellence that enhances lives and reflects community values.

What role does collaboration play in building strong client and colleague relationships? Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do at Studio G Architects. Strong relationships with clients and colleagues grow from a culture of listening, respect, and shared purpose. We engage clients and community members as true partners in the design process, ensuring that their voices shape the spaces we create. This approach builds trust, deepens understanding, and results in solutions that are both innovative and responsive to real needs.

Within the firm, collaboration fuels creativity and mentorship. We work as a single team from beginning to end, ensuring no detail is lost along the way. Ultimately, collaboration ensures our projects not only meet functional goals but also strengthen the communities they serve.
