C.E. Floyd Co. receives honor award by AGC for Spencer Brewery project

Spencer Brewery - Spencer, MA Spencer Brewery - Spencer MA

Spencer, MA C.E. Floyd Company received an honor award for its work on Spencer Brewery at the AGC Build New England awards gala.

“This year’s winners are very impressive,” said Chris Floyd, C.E. Floyd’s president and CEO. “It’s such an honor for our team to be recognized with these other amazing projects.”

Working with Kellar Associates and LLT Architects, C.E. Floyd completed the first Trappist Brewery in the U.S.

Saint Joseph’s Abbey used many of the same materials found in the other Trappist Breweries – all in Europe. Some of the materials and methods were ones not typically used in the United States, making it difficult, if not impossible, to find subcontractors who were familiar with the products and installation methods. Additionally, C.E. Floyd had to overcome language barriers and measurement challenges.

“C.E. Floyd met the challenge of coordinating the efforts of a multilingual, multinational and multicultural work group in a remarkably successful way,” said Spencer Brewery director Father Isaac Keeley.

The brew and packaging equipment was being manufactured in Europe. C.E. Floyd had to coordinate with OEM supervisors from Germany, Italy and Poland in addition to the U.S. The architect was from Singapore and the monastery’s brew process engineer was from Belgium. To aid communication between the team members, a cloud-based document and data management software was used. Notable subcontractors on the project included Gregoire Electrical, J.J. Bafaro and M.J. Cataldo. The Awards jury included Mary Gately, AGC MA; Danielle Arciero, Massachusetts Port Authority; Pamela Delphenich, Gensler Associates; Mark Gallagher, Elaine Construction; Gerry Guttierrez, AIA, Sasaki Associates; Barbara Hansberry, MA School Building Authority; Maureen McCaffrey, PE, LEED AP, MIT Investment Management Company; Carl Sciple, MOCA Systems; and Robert Sullivan, Children’s Hospital.
